I Miss My Dad

Everyone needs a hero and you were mine. You were a POW in the camp next to Belson for 5 long years And for the rest of your life you were always grateful that you were only 1 of 2 in your battalion ( 2nd batt Irish Guards) to survive. I would find you standing in the kitchen looking at the food in the cupboard and you said "A man is always rich if he has a loaf of bread." There I am again quoting you directly I do that a lot. Your wisdom was astonishing and you were always right about the motives of people, but you never lost your faith in human nature. A trick you had to learn to survive. I need to thank you for so many things. You were always there for me and my daughters giving love and strength and wisdom. Most of all I need to thank you for making me totally unmaterialistic.Nothing mattered to you but the happiness and well being of your family.Did you hear the eulogy Amanda (granddaughter) gave.? I know you would have been so proud. We miss you so much it hurts. You left us lovely memories and a great example.I would give anything to have your arms round me now and your fingers soothing my hair. You would take knives off me so I wouldn' t cut myself and hold my hand when I crossed the road. I am 52 years old and I need you !!! You were kind and gentle and fair, a gentle giant. I am so glad you were My Dad, everyone liked you, we loved you more than you could ever know.I miss your voice I miss your smile I just miss you. It's as if a light has gone out. You were there when I first opened my eyes, I was there when you finally shut yours and in between was wonderful.

" Isle of view " ( remember this was what we wrote on letters to each other when I was serving in the Army in Germany) Christine
